This course equips you with the essential skills to dig deeper and uncover the real stories behind historical events. This isn’t about memorizing dates and names; it’s about learning how to think critically about the past.

We’ll explore fascinating and complex case studies, like:

  • The tragic death of an elephant in Kerala

  • The multifaceted legacy of the Partition of India

  • The ongoing debates surrounding Abraham Lincoln and racism

As we add layers of information to each story, you’ll see how our understanding can shift and evolve, challenging your own assumptions and biases.  

Over five engaging 90-minute online sessions, you’ll learn to assemble and use a historian’s toolkit. This includes:

  • Analyzing primary and secondary sources

  • Identifying different perspectives

  • Recognizing bias

  • Understanding the limitations of incomplete information

You’ll develop the ability to:

  • Ask tough questions

  • Evaluate evidence

  • Form your own informed opinions about the past

About Instructor

Sriram Naganathan brings a rare blend of journalistic rigor and educational vision to the classroom. A core member of ThinQ, a collective focused on nurturing critical thinking and inquiry, and a resource person with IgnusERG, he works to transform education for marginalized children across India.Before committing full-time to education, Sriram built a rich career in journalism. He trained in Business Journalism at the Times Research Foundation, served as a Reuters Fellow at the University of Oxford, and held editorial roles at Business India and Business World. His writing has appeared in publications like the Asian Venture Capital Journal and Oxford Analytica.Sriram also taught History at The School – KFI, Chennai, where he was known for helping students engage deeply with big ideas and historical inquiry. Today, he continues to inspire learners to think critically about the world—its past, its present, and its possibilities.
