About Course

Delve into the fascinating world of the brain with Krithika Mohan in a captivating two-hour neuroscience workshop this August! Designed for students aged 12 and above, this session will unlock the mysteries of vision and memory, offering an engaging exploration of how our brains perceive the world and store our experiences. Prepare to journey through the intricate structures of the brain, discovering the incredible processes that allow us to remember, learn, and even shape our own reality.

Krithika will guide you through the fundamental aspects of memory, beginning with the crucial role of the hippocampus in forming new memories. You’ll explore various memory categories, including declarative, emotional, and procedural memory, understanding how our brains store, consolidate, and recall information. The workshop will also touch upon the surprising fragility of memories and how recall can actually change the memory itself, prompting thought-provoking discussions on the nature of our past.

Beyond memory, the workshop will shed light on the cutting-edge techniques scientists use to study and even manipulate brain cells. You’ll learn about “neurons that fire together wire together” – Hebbian learning – and the concept of pattern completion, where a small input can trigger the recall of a complete memory. Discover the remarkable efficiency of the human brain’s energy consumption and be introduced to concepts like “place cells,” which help us navigate our environment, and “concept cells,” which respond to specific ideas or individuals.

This interdisciplinary journey will showcase how diverse fields converge in neuroscience research, providing a unique glimpse into what it’s like to work at the forefront of brain science. Krithika will also share her personal intellectual journey, revealing what ignited her passion for neuroscience and how she embarked on her current research path.

Prepare for an interactive experience that combines scientific discovery with intriguing questions about our sense of self.

Join Krithika Mohan for an unforgettable two hours that will deepen your understanding of the brain and ignite your curiosity about the complexities of vision and memory!

About Instructor

Introducing Dr. Krithika Mohan, PhD - a neuroscientist exploring how the brain makes sense of the world.Dr. Mohan earned her PhD in Computational Neuroscience from the University of Chicago, where her research focused on understanding how neural activity supports visual categorization and learning. She continued this work through postdoctoral research at Caltech and UC Berkeley, investigating how groups of neurons encode information and guide complex decision-making.What makes Dr. Mohan’s work stand out is her ability to combine careful experimental research with advanced computational modeling. By using tools like recurrent neural networks, she brings new clarity to questions about how the brain represents and processes information. Her research, published in leading scientific journals, reflects a thoughtful and rigorous approach to understanding cognition.(For those of us who attended Kumarans group of schools, Krithika graduated from Kumarans in 2008! So, join us as we learn more from her.)We’re excited to learn from Dr. Mohan as she shares insights from the mechanisms behind how we think, learn, and perceive.
