About the event
You might know about the peppered moths of England, whose population changed from light to dark colored as the industrial revolution progressed. But do you know how fast did this change happen? And do you know how much time did it take for the population to become light colored again?
Evolution is often imagined as a thing of the past. We think of it as changes that gradually happened over millions of years, causing organisms to adapt to their surroundings. But is that all evolution is? Is it always that slow? Is it possible to see evolution happening? Is evolution still going on? Will it ever stop? This master class will explore some answers to these and other questions about evolution.
Ages 10 and older are welcome!
Saurabh Mahajan loves to research, teach, and apply biology. He teaches at various universities in Bangalore, researches genomes and how they change, and co-runs a biotechnology start-up. During his PhD, he used computers and mathematics to study how the genomes of bacteria have changed over millions of years. As a teacher, he is happiest when he can help students to ask questions and figure out answers on their own!
