Misconceptions Decoder: A Data-Driven Workshop for Middle Math Teachers

Misconceptions in middle school math aren’t just careless mistakes—they’re deep-rooted misunderstandings that persist across topics and grade levels, creating invisible learning gaps. A student struggling with fractions and decimals today may face serious challenges in algebra, probability, and real-world problem-solving later.

Where do these misconceptions come from? Why do they persist despite repeated instruction? More importantly, how can we fix them effectively?

This two-session online workshop will help middle school math teachers (Grades 5-9) identify, address, and prevent the most common and persistent misconceptions in key math topics. We will use real student responses from ASSET assessments to analyze where students go wrong and equip teachers with targeted strategies to correct these errors.
