Challenge #15 – Making rules to solve puzzles
Hive puzzles are similar to the very popular Sudoku.
The puzzle is a grid of hexagons with different blocks marked by thick lines. There are two rules –
- Each block must contain the numbers from 1 up to the number of hexagons in the block. For example, the topmost block in the puzzle below consists of 4 hexagons so those hexagons must be filled with the numbers: 1, 2, 3 and 4 with no repeated numbers.
- No number can be next to the same number in any direction, along a shared edge. So in the grid below, the fact that there is a 3 in the middle means there cannot be a 3 in any of the 6 hexagons surrounding it.
This week’s challenge is to solve the puzzle (find which number each letter corresponds to), but also derive rules that help you solve such puzzles faster, building off from the original 2 rules provided above.
